Choose glassware that fits

Glass shape affects the way you serve a drink, but you can start with a small set of everyday glasses.

Step by step

  1. Use a small stemmed glass for a chilled drink served without ice.
  2. Use a sturdy rocks glass when serving over cubes.
  3. Use a tall glass for drinks with plenty of mixer and ice.
  4. Check the capacity before mixing, leaving room for ice and comfortable sipping.

Common mistake

A recipe's measured liquids are not the glass capacity: ice occupies space, and mixing adds water. A very large glass does not require a larger spirit measure.

Try it

Measure your glasses with water once and write down their practical capacity.
